Pet Portraits

Honour Your Furry Friend.

There is no better way to celebrate your beloved pet, than with a hand-drawn ink portrait capturing their true personality.
I work predominantly with black ink, focusing on texture and shading to give shape and form to the portrait; giving life to your pet on the page.

The Portrait Process.

Planning

The key to a successful portrait is a clear high quality reference image (see tips for photographing your pet). I will use this image to plan out your portrait, paying particular attention to the main focal point, shaddows and highlights and the overall scale and composition.

Pencil

Once I have the plan I will do a light pencil sketch of your pet using the reference photo. This is a quick but crucial stage ensuring that everything is in proportion and the details, highlights and shaddows are where they should be.

Ink

This is my favourite stage of the process, making marks to pring your pet to life. I use a dip pen and black indian ink for my drawings. I love the versatile nature of the dip pen nibs allowing the weight or thickness of a line to be dictated by pressure. It is the perfect tool for building up layers of texture and shading giving a real depth to my drawings.

Dispatch

Once I am happy with the finished drawing it is mounted, packaged up, and posted out to you.

A Quick Guide to Photographing Your Pet.

Lighting

Natural light is best—shoot near a window or outside.
Avoid flash—it can cause red-eye or startle your pet.
Position—try to keep the main light source behind the camera.

Background

Keep it simple—a clutter-free or solid-colored background helps your pet stand out.
Use contrast—a dark pet against a light background (or vice versa) helps define them better.

Composition

Get down to their level—eye-level shots feel more intimate and engaging.
Fill the frame—especially for portraits, get close or zoom in to show expression and detail

Focus & Sharpness

Focus on the eyes—they’re the most expressive part and should be sharp.
Use a fast shutter speed—to freeze movement and avoid blur (1/250s or faster for action).

Pet Behaviour

Capture their personality—whether they’re playful, shy, or majestic.
Use treats or toys—to direct their gaze or reward stillness.

Extra Tips

Take lots of shots—pets are unpredictable, and quantity gives you choice.
Shoot candid moments—not every great shot is posed.
Have a helper if possible—to wrangle or get their attention while you shoot.
